Current Governors

All governors serve a three year term. Parent governors are elected by the parent body and when a vacancy arises, this is communicated to parents and an election held. Similarly, the staff governors are elected by the staff. Co-opted governors are
co-opted by the Trust based on the skills needs within the Local Governing Board.

Jonathan Pritchard
Co-Opted Chair

Term of office ends: 15 January 2022
Governor responsibilities: Health and Wellbeing

Jonathan has a background in education and social work. A qualified residential social worker he worked in several Residential Schools, Children’s Homes and Assessment Centres, in senior positions including Head of Care, deputy officer in charge and acting officer in charge in a number of establishments. He is also a qualified counsellor. Jonathan was also an elected local Councillor and during his tenure was the political group’s Education and Children spokesman. In addition to his Governing Body positions, he is Chairman of the local NSPCC branch, Chairman of the local Friends of Cheam Library. Currently running his own business providing IT support and web-services.

John Carpenter

Governor responsibilities: Safeguarding and Looked-After Children.

John started his career as a navigating officer in the merchant Navy before working for the London Borough of Croydon managing leisure centres and teaching swimming. He has been a serving Metropolitan Police officer since 1994 and for 9 years he was the local beat officer in Belmont and was a familiar face at Avenue primary school. He is currently one of Sutton borough’s Safer Schools Police officers, primarily working within secondary schools assisting them with discipline issues, investigating crime in schools and delivering safety and crime prevention talks. He also assists with Police cadets.

Revd Mark Williams

Governor responsibilities: Safeguarding and Looked-After Children, Health and Well being, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

After gaining a degree in Theological Studies, Mark trained as a teacher which led to being head of RE, PSE and Careers in Beaminster, Dorset. Mark was subsequently ordained into the Church of England and is now vicar and Methodist minister at St John’s Church, Belmont. He is also Hon. Chaplain to the 219 Sqn Air Cadets, Royal British Legion (Belmont) and the Royal Marsden Hospital. He is chair of SACRE (Standing Advisory Council for RE) and a Safeguarding trainer for the London Methodist District. Mark brings to the school 14 years’ experience in teaching, skills in managing volunteers and dispute resolution, pastoral care and a commitment to the local community of all ages.

Anne Arnold

Anne has worked at Avenue Primary for 15 years and has been Bursar for the last 7 after completing a Certificate in School Business Management. Anne previously worked in banking and then for BT where she led the major customer billing unit for London, building experience in people management, finance, HR and customer service, as well as systems development and testing. Anne took a break from paid employment from 1994 to 1999 after the birth of her daughter, although she remained active in the voluntary sector and ran a local parent and toddler group, and was treasurer of Belmont Village Preschool Playgroup and secretary of T.A.P.T.A. (the school’s previous PTA)

Lisa Hunt
Head Teacher (Maternity Leave)

Lisa is currently the Head Teacher at Avenue Primary Academy. Lisa has 17 years of teaching experience across the primary age range as a teacher, year leader and senior leader; she has held a management position for 11 years and has led English, Maths, PE, Curriculum Development and the Community Cohesion Team; she is a designated Safeguarding lead for the school. Lisa is a Specialist Leader of Education for English within the Teaching School Alliance and is an Associate Advisor for the Local Authority, supporting teaching and learning in both Sutton and other local authorities. She has been a staff governor for seven years.

Claire is currently the Head of School at Avenue Primary Academy. Claire has 13 years of teaching experience across the primary age range as a teacher, year leader and senior leader; she has held a management position for 8 years and has led Mathematics, PE and Assessment; she is a deputy designated Safeguarding officer for the school. Claire is a Specialist Leader of Education for Mathematics and Assessment within the Teaching School Alliance and was an Associate Advisor for the Local Authority, supporting teaching and learning in both Sutton and other local authorities. She has been a staff governor for 3 years.

Parent Governor

Term of Office Ends: 23.01.2021

My son is at Avenue and my daughter will hopefully join him in future. I do have a long-time commitment with the school. I have been on the PTA committee for two consecutive years. Working in the private sector as engineering consultant coupled with my academic background (PhD in engineering) I have gained experience relevant to the role of a Parent Governor: from participating in various committees at professional level to staff mentoring, interfacing with client organization. I have received extensive training in project management, cost control, quality control, QHSE (Health & Safety), Equity & Diversity, Teaching & Learning, and others.
